CrewAI: A Team of Agents, Each With One Job

CrewAI lets you describe agents by role, goal and tools, then has them work together on a task. We use it to prototype multi-agent workflows quickly in Python, and its Flows when steps must run in a fixed, auditable order.

  1. Agent 01ResearcherFinds recent news and filings on the accountsearch_web, read_filings
  2. Agent 02AnalystTurns findings into three buying signalssummarize, score
  3. Agent 03WriterDrafts a short outreach email in the rep's voicedraft_email

Inside One CrewAI Agent

CrewAI is an open-source Python framework with a large community, plus a commercial platform for building, deploying and monitoring crews. Every crew is built from agents like this one.

Five Crews We Are Asked to Build

Each crew is a handful of focused agents. Small crews are cheaper, faster and easier to test than one agent that does everything.

[ Crews or Flows ]

Let Agents Collaborate, or Script Exactly What Happens

Crews

Autonomous collaboration

Agents decide how to work together within their roles. Best for open-ended research, writing and analysis.

Film crew working together around cameras and lights on a set

Flows

Deterministic control

Code decides the order, with state and branching; crews can run inside individual steps. Best when audits need the same path every time.

[ Fit ]

When We Reach for CrewAI, and When We Do Not

We use several agent frameworks. CrewAI wins on speed to a working multi-agent prototype.

  1. Good fit

Multi-agent prototypes in days, in Python

Roles, tasks and a crew are a few lines each, so a working prototype comes together fast.

  2. Good fit

Work that maps naturally to roles

Researcher, writer and reviewer style jobs fit the crew model without forcing it.

  3. Good fit

    Research, writing and analysis tasks

Crews are at their best on knowledge work where each role checks the last.

  4. Good fit

Teams that want a managed platform later

CrewAI's enterprise platform can host, monitor and govern the crews you built.

  5. Better: LangGraph

Long runs that pause for days for approval

Durable checkpoints and resumable interrupts are LangGraph's strength.

  6. Better: OpenAI Agents SDK or Mastra

    TypeScript products

A TypeScript-first framework keeps the agent in the same language as the app.

  7. Better: Google ADK

Agents on Google Cloud with built-in evals

ADK ships evaluation and Google Cloud deployment out of the box.

  8. Better: a provider SDK

One agent with a few tools

No crew is needed; a provider SDK is less to maintain.

[ From prototype to production ]

What We Add Before a Crew Goes Live

  • Limits

Maximum iterations, time and tokens per run, so a crew cannot loop forever.

  • Tracing

Every agent step traced in Langfuse or a similar tool, with cost per run.

  • Tests

Saved inputs with expected outputs, run on every change to roles or prompts.

  • Human review

A person approves anything that leaves the company, such as emails or reports.

The Crew Menu

Pick one line. Most clients start with a prototype, then put the crew that works into production.
